Christopher Isherwood - Goodbye to Berlin (1930)

The main character describes himself as a camera, which I think is pretty accurate: he doesn't really do much of anything other than set up the stories for the other characters while he simply observes. Obviously, Sally Bowles is the star of the show here, but despite that, she's still not the main character. The story really succeeds in showing a clear juxtaposition between comfort and bleakness. If you've read the ending you know what I mean especially. The book takes place during the birth of Nazi Germany, and we get to see the narrator spend time with his cohorts and friends on one hand, only to see horrifying acts of discrimination on the other. also its GAY. cope liberals
